Greetings!
Serving Older Adults in Chicago: Cafes,
Satellite Centers,
and NORCs
The Creating Community for a Lifetime site visit
to
Chicago provided a terrific opportunity to learn about
three very different-and very successful-
approaches to delivering services to older adults.
We
started the day at one of four Satellite Senior
Centers operated as a collaborative effort of the City
of Chicago and a non-profit service provider,
Christian Churches Caring. Mather Cafˇ provided
a "lunch and learn" experience and at the Council for
the Jewish Elderly, we heard about CJE's role in a
naturally occurring retirement community (NORC).
Although the approaches, sponsoring organizations,
and target audiences of the programs differ, they
share a common emphasis on working collaboratively
with a variety of community groups to effectively
meet the needs of older adults.

| Chicago's Satellite Senior Centers |
| |
The Satellite Senior Centers are a partnership of the
City of Chicago and non-profit organizations, with a
different partner in each neighborhood. In Portage
Park, the city partners with Christian Churches
Caring, an ecumenical organization that provides
outreach and services to older adults and those who
care for them; in West Town, the partner is Casa
Centrales, an Hispanic organization, and the Austin
partner is the South Austin Community Coalition
Council, a grass roots advocacy group.

| Mather Cafˇ |
| |
Providing choices for older adults is a key premise of
three Chicago-area Mather Cafes opened over the
past five years. The cafes are operated by the non-
profit Mather Lifeways, a trust that seeks to improve
the quality of life for older adults.

| The Council for Jewish Elderly |
| |
CJE, a partnership of the Jewish United Fund and the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, operates
retirement, assisted living and long term care
programs as well as providing services for people who
need assistance to remain at home. CJE's federally-
funded demonstration project, There's No Place Like
Home, focuses on naturally occurring retirement
communities (NORCs)-communities in which a high
percentage of residents are older adults.
